From our blog:

Why are fee-only advisors different? Three key things…

Hi, I’m Jamie with Woodson Wealth Management, and I’m going to help you sidestep some major headaches, save you time, and put more money in your pocket.

First – some quick background about the changing financial services industry:

Over the last 15 years, our industry has gone through some dramatic shifts. At the outset of my career, folks had to look to the Wall Street Journal or call their stock broker for information on a particular stock or what’s going on in the markets. Now, you can get your news and updated stock quotes in just seconds.

Margins are shrinking and financial companies are looking for any way to keep more money flowing through the doors. For example, many big name advisory firms generate 85% of their revenue by charging you to manage your portfolio. Their job is to help you self discover why you have no reason managing your own money and then charge you a fee to do so. This is why fee-only advisors are different and frankly, why I decide to change the trajectory of my career.

Reason Number One: We are fiduciaries and have to act in your best interest at all times. Not some times, not when it’s most convenient, but at all times. This is even the case when it might make us less money.

Reason Number Two: You choose how to work with us. There is no cookie-cutter financial plan, and there is no one-size-fits-all engagement. We will work with you to customize how you want to work with us, and work out a fair, fee-only arrangement. You’ll always know whos-doing-what, and what that is going to cost you.

Reason Number Three. The removal of quotas and sales goals. I remember early in my career when it was all about the client and how we could help them. More recently, it’s about putting your sales goals on a break room wall so you can see how much more “stuff” you are selling compared to your peers. Let me ask you: Who do you think wins in that environment?

After years of working with clients, I’ve seen the industry evolve and it hasn’t always been for the better, but we have come a long way and I truly believe the fee-only arrangement is the wave of the future. Personally, I believe it’s the best way for you as an investor to receive unfiltered, unbiased advice and it’s why I do what I do.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and I would love to talk to you further about it. As a thank you for your time today, I’ve provided a link to my free guide, Is a Brand-Name or an Independent Advisor Best for You? below.
